The Queen will present new colours to the Royal Welsh in a ceremony today.

ITV Cymru Wales takes a look back the history of the Royal Welsh and the forming of the regiment.

The Royal Welsh is one of the new large infantry regiments of the British Army and it was officially formed on St Davids Day in 2006.

It's one of three regiments to trace its lineage and draw recruits primarily from Wales.

The regiments have a history and heritage that goes back over three hundred years

  • The Welsh Regiment of Fuzileers were founded in 1702

  • The Prince of Wales's Own Royal Regiment of Welsh Fusiliers were founded in 1714

  • The Royal Welsh Fusiliers are involved in Anglo-Boer War from 1899-1902 and the The First World War

  • The Royal Welch Fusiliers and The Welch Regiment take part in the second world war

  • The Royal Welsh is formed from the two regiments in 2006

  • Most recent involvements include Iraq and Afganistan

Today, the regiment has gained 244 Battle Honours, far more that can be displayed on the Colours.

43 of its soldiers have received Britain’s highest award for valour – The Victoria Cross.
