Cardiff Central Bus Station to close after 60 years

The bus station has been serving passengers for over 60 years.

Cardiff's bus station, which has transported passengers to and from the nation's capital for over 60 years, is to close.

The closure comes into force at midnight this Saturday, with the last National Express Bus leaving Cardiff Bus station at 11.30pm tonight.

During its closure current bus stops around the city will be used to transport passengers, with new stops installed to allow services to make these areas their set-off points.

The closure is going ahead so work on the new Central Square development can begin, with building expected to start in April 2016 and the new bus station expected to open in summer 2018.

The development will see a new bus station, offices and the HQ for BBC Wales built on the Central Square area.

Architects Foster + Partners were chosen earlier this year as the preferred architects to design the station, but no detail of the design has yet been finalised with the council saying the scheme is at a concept stage.

Cardiff council say talks are continuing with the public to find out what people want to see in the new bus station.
