Four hours a day watering his prize plants: Champion grower shares secrets of success

Veteran horticulturalist Ivor Mace from Treorchy has spent over fifty years growing his garden. Now, not only does he exhibit his flowers at shows, he judges them too.

Ivor first started growing plants aged twelve when he was given strawberry plants to raise.

His garden has since come a long way and features:

  • 130 pots of miniature roses.

  • 300 pots of carnations.

  • 250 pots of late flowering chrysanthemums

It can take Ivor around four hours a day to water all of the plants, an effort well worth making considering he's won the National Chrysanthemum Society's annual championship more than 20 times.

He's also held the title of Britain's Champion Carnation Grower seven times.
