New organ donation law gives families bigger say
Wales' new soft opt-out organ donation system will come into action from the 1st of December, and presumes consent for people's organs and tissues to be donated unless they stipulate otherwise.
On top of this, the new law will mean a person's family and friends will have a significant role to play in the ultimate decision to donate an organ. If they knew their loved one did not wish to be an organ donor, even if they had not opted out, they will be able to tell clinicians at the hospital and donation will not take place.
This makes discussing organ donation vital for families, and some family members may not share the same views.
Rachel Bodman says she fully supports the change, and is pro-organ donation.
Rachel's mother Caroline, though, is not fully behind the new system and says she needs time to think it through.
The Welsh Government is keen to emphasise that people should discuss with their relatives whether or not they want their organs and tissues to be donated.
Rhys Meirion recognises the importance of sharing decisions about organ donation with your family.Fortunately, his sister Elen had discussed organ donation with her daughter Gwenllian before she passed away.
