NI pathologist compares Kingsmill murders to IS atrocities

Northern Ireland's top pathologist has compared the murders of ten Protestant workmen in South Armagh more than 40 years ago to atrocities carried out in recent years by so-called Islamic State.

Jack Crane, who has reviewed the case, has spoken exclusively to UTV in a special documentary airing on Thursday night, called Kingsmill - The Survivor.

UTV Correspondent Sharon O'Neill has been working on the programme and spoke at length with Alan Black, the sole survivor of the attack.

Man arrested in Kingsmills probe released

A man arrested as part of the investigation into the Kingsmills massacre has been released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.

The 59-year-old was arrested in Newry on Friday and was questioned over the murder of 10 people and the attempted murder of another man.

His was the first arrest made since the inquiry into the 1976 killings was re-opened.

A campaign by the victims' relatives led to an inquest and the subsequent re-opening of the investigation.

On 5 January 1976, a mini-bus carrying textile workers was ambushed by an IRA gang and the protestant workmen onboard were shot - only one survived.

Man arrested in Kingsmill murder investigation

Police investigating the murders of 10 men at Kingsmill in 1976 have arrested a man.

The 59-year-old was detained on Friday in the Newry area and is currently assisting police with their inquiries.

Ten Protestant workmen were taken from their minibus and asked their religion before being shot in the Co Armagh village of Kingsmill 40 years ago.

One man survived the attack, despite being shot 18 times, while the IRA was blamed.

The arrest comes two months after the PSNI revealed a major breakthrough in the Troubles case, after a potential match was found to a palm print left on a getaway vehicle used by the republican grouping.
