"Stay safe and stay out of the water", that's the message from Northumbria Police after reports of people risking their lives by acting irresponsibly and jumping off bridges into the water below.

Police and fire crews have urged the public to act responsibly after a video went viral online showing multiple people jumping into the River Tyne – with one individual even jumping from one of the bridges above.

Officers have confirmed nobody was injured on that occasion but the incident has caused officers and other emergency service staff to issue appropriate advice to those who participate in this type of dangerous and foolish act.

Ian Warne, Head of Prevention and Education at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said although water that feels warm on the surface, it can still cause cold water shock, which seriously affects your breathing, heart rate and muscles.

“This makes you more likely to inhale water directly into the lungs and it can cause heart attacks, even if you’re young and healthy. It’s simply not worth the risk.”

Police also had reports that those involved were excessively drinking.
