Nissan to start 'pilot' project in Sunderland with 50 staff

Nissan will start a "pilot activity" at its plant in Sunderland this week with "around 50" members of staff.

Production at the Wearside factory was suspended last month following the outbreak of coronavirus.

This new project will involve members of the team responsible for powertrains and Nissan has said it has carried out "extensive" risk assessments as well as put in place many safety measures.

A spokesperson for the Japanese manufacturer said:

They added that the firm was working with "very limited visibility on future market conditions" and thanked the European governments which had provided financial support.

The spokesperson said:

The Sunderland plant opened in 1986 and employs about 7,000 people.
