At the end of an intricate two day operation, the centrepiece of the New Wear Crossing is in its final position.

It marks an important point in the creation of the bridge, which will connect the Pallion area with Wessington Way and the A19.

Planning for the raising operation has been in the pipeline for two years. Despite cold and damp conditions, the work went to plan.

The new bridge is due to open in the spring of 2018, and will carry an estimated twenty seven thousand vehicles every day.
