Bookmakers have slashed the odds on Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce becoming the next England manager.

William Hill said the odd have been cut from 2/1 to 5/4 following a number of bets on Allardyce - including one of £600 at 2/1.

His odds came in to Evens at one point on Monday however they were eased as Steve Bruce’s odds of bagging the job tumbled. Available at 33/1 at the start of Monday, he is now the 10/1 fourth favourite. Jurgen Klinsmann is the 9/4 second favourite with Eddie Howe 9/1.

Latest odds on next England manager according to William Hill:

  • Sam Allardyce 5/4

  • Jurgen Klinsmann 9/4

  • Eddie Howe 9/1

  • Steve Bruce 10/1

  • Glenn Hoddle 12/1

  • Guus Hiddink 16/1

  • Harry Redknp 16/1

  • Arsene Wenger 25/1

Allardyce, 61, currently on a pre-season tour with Sunderland in Austria was said to be set for talks with the FA this week although the Press Association claimed he has yet to be contacted by football chiefs.

Meanwhile former Newcastle and England striker Alan Shearer said fellow Geordie Steve Bruce was the best man for the job.

Writing for The Sun, he said : "Why wouldn't they give it to Steve Bruce? He would be my pick. Bruce has worked in English football all his life."He knows the game inside out and is widely respected. He has played at the highest level with Manchester United."
