If you suffer from claustrophobia, an MRI scan can be a traumatic experience. Now, a larger scanner has opened on North Tyneside, which should cut patients' anxiety.

During an MRI scan, a person lies in a large tube. The scanner uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to produce images of inside the body.

North Tyneside General Hospital has replaced its traditional scanner with a new model, which is less enclosed than before.

Another benefit of the new scanner is that it produces much clearer images, allowing for more accurate and speedy diagnosis.

The use of MRI scans has increased dramatically in recent years. They are used to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions from heart disease to neurological conditions and cancer.
