Grave props cause distress

People with relatives buried in Bedlington Cemetery in Northumberland say they're disgusted at wooden stakes which have been used to prop up gravestones.

Northumberland County Council has propped up 150 graves in the cemetery for safety reasons. It says many were loose or tilting and in danger of falling over.

Pat Brown has two daughters buried there - Jill who died aged 19 and Dawn who was 13. Mrs Brown says what the council has done to the grave is heartbreaking.

Andy Rutherford, head of Highways and Neighbourhood Services, says quick action was needed to make the stones safe. In the longer term invisible rods will be inserted into the base of the stones to hold them secure.
