Mountain rescue teams said they were seeing a rise in the number of avoidable incidents involving walkers getting into difficulty.

Forestry England is still working to clear Thrunton Wood, near Rothbury, following the devastating storm in 2021.

The two were competing in the Montane Spine Race from the Peak District, through the Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland, and into the Scottish Borders.
