Brit Awards 2016: Adele among winners at star-studded bash

Adele was the big winner at the 2016 Brit Awards, taking four awards at a ceremony that also paid a powerful tribute to the late David Bowie.

Other winners included James Bay and Coldplay - who won best British group for a record fourth time and dedicated their award to musicians in refugee camps around the world.

Adele won her fourth award of the evening at the Brits after scooping Album of the Year for 25.

Earlier in the night she broke down in tears as she won Best Single, Best Female Solo Artist and the Global Success gongs.

She thanked her fans, her boyfriend and her little boy Angelo who she called "peanut" on stage, saying: "He's the love of my life."

One Direction have won Best Video at The Brit Awards - but only two of the band members were there.

Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson accepted the award, which was voted for by the fans.

They apologised for the other boys not being there but said they were all "enjoying their break" in reference to the band taking a year off from their busy schedule.

David Bowie posthumously honoured with Brits Icon

Annie Lennox paid tribute to the "legendary" David Bowie as he was posthumously named Brit Icon at this year's awards.

She told the audience: "The legacy of his extraordinary sound and vision will be loved and revered for as long as the earth still spins."

Actor Gary Oldman accepted the award on Bowie's behalf.

Remembering his friend, he said: "I can assure you that David faced his illness with enormous courage, with dignity and grace and customary humour.

"Even in dire circumstances, when he wrote to tell me the bad news that he had cancer, he added "the good news is, I've got my cheek bones back."

Bowie got a standing ovation as Oldman continued: "He was the sweetest soul ever, with the best cheek bones until it was done.

"David, you were mortal, but your potential was superhuman and your remarkable music is living on. We love you and we thank you."

Tim Peake appears at Brits to announce award

British astronaut Tim Peake may be orbiting the globe on the International Space Station, but he was still able to announce an award this evening at the Brit Awards.

He appeared at the ceremony to declare Adele as the winner of the Global Success Award.

Adele broke down in tears as she was honoured with the Global Success Award at the Brits.

The star was presented with her award "from space" by British astronaut Tim Peake and said: "My kid's going to think I'm so cool.

She added: "Global success. Not bad for a girl from Totttenham who doesn't like flying."
