Labour sweeps to victory in Oldham by-election

Jeremy Corbyn hailed the Oldham by-election win as a "vote of confidence in our party" after Jim McMahon swept to victory for Labour.

McMahon secured a majority of more than 10,000 and an increased share of the vote in the by-election which was sparked by the death of long-standing MP Michael Meacher.

But Ukip leader Nigel Farage complained of a "bent" contest and said the party would file a formal complaint.

Standing among a crowd of Labour supporters who had waited patiently in the cold for his arrival, Mr Corbyn made a brief speech praising Mr McMahon before leaving by car.

The party leader refused to answer any questions from the media during the short photo opportunity but hugged Mr McMahon, who said he was "overwhelmed" by his victory.

In his speech, Mr Corbyn said the victory showed how "strong" the Labour party is.

This campaign shows just how strong our party is not just here in Oldham but all over the country.

It shows the way we have driven the Tories back on tax credits, police cuts, on their whole austerity agenda and narrative.

It shows just how strong, how deep-rooted and how broad our party, the Labour Party, is for the whole of Britain

Labour: Farage complaints 'look like sour grapes'

Deputy leader of the Labour party Tom Watson has dismissed Nigel Farage's complaints over the by-election as "sour grapes."

Farage to make formal complaint over 'bent' by-election

Ukip leader Nigel Farage has said his party will make a formal complaint after claiming the Oldham West and Royton by-election was "bent."

Mr Farage said he was not questioning Labour's victory, but denounced the electoral process as "bent" after claims that people had arrived at polling booths carrying bundles of postal votes.

He said the result raised questions about the conduct of elections in areas with large ethnic minority communities and claimed that in constituencies with large numbers of minority voters who do not speak English "effectively the electoral process is now dead".

"As a veteran of over 30 by-elections I have never seen such a perverse result. Serious questions need to be asked," Mr Farage said.

Jeremy Corbyn 'delighted' over by-election win

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he is "delighted" following news of the Oldham West and Royton by-election win.

I am delighted that Labour has not only won the Oldham West and Royton by-election - but increased our share of the vote since the general election in May.

Jim McMahon will make an excellent MP and a worthy successor to Michael Meacher, and I am looking forward to welcoming him to Labour’s team at Westminster.

By-elections can be difficult for the party holding the seat, and turnouts are often low. But to increase our share of the vote since the General Election is a vote of confidence in our party.
