Trial of two Al Jazeera journalists detained in Egypt adjourned

The trial of two Al Jazeera journalists charged with aiding a terrorist organisation in Egypt has been adjourned.

Canadian-based Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, from Egypt, spent over a year behind bars in the country before being released on bail last month.

A third journalist, Peter Greste, was released and deported back to Australia earlier in February.

Both men deny the charge.

The trial will resume on March 19.

The family of jailed Al Jazeera journalist Baher Mohamed have confirmed he has been released on bail in Egypt pending a retrial.

"We finished the procedures for the release of my brother a short while ago," Mohamed's brother Assem told AFP. "He is at home for the first time in more than a year"

Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney has welcomed the decision by an Egyptian judge to order the release two Al Jazeera journalists on bail.

Clooney said she was "encouraged" by the ruling in relation to Mohamed Fahmy, who she had acted for, and Baher Mohamed.

But she stressed: "At the same time, there is no guarantee that a retrial will be carried out in compliance with international standards or result in the full acquittal on all charges that Fahmy deserves.

"It may also take several months to complete."

Canadian Al-Jazeera journalist Mohamed Fahmy has been released from an Egyptian prison, pending a retrial.

Mr Fahmy's brother tweeted that he was let out early today after more than a year in jail. He posted 33,000 dollars' (£21,500) bail following a court decision to allow him to walk free.

It was not clear if another Al-Jazeera journalist, Baher Mohammed, was also being released.

Mr Fahmy spent more than 400 days in detention after he was charged with terrorism for providing the Muslim Brotherhood, now declared a terrorist organisation, with a platform.

His next court hearing is 23 February. He must check in at a police station every day until then.

Australian Peter Greste, who was tried with his two colleagues, was deported home two weeks ago.

Al Jazeera journalists Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed have been released on bail by an Egyptian court.

The case against them has not been dismissed.

At a court in Cairo, Judge Hassan Farid said the next hearing would be on February 23.

The two Al Jazeera journalists still in prison in Egypt will stand trial on 12th February, a lawyer for one of the journalists, Mostafa Nagy, said today.

Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed remain behind bars after their colleague, the Australian journalist Peter Grests, was released.

Freed Al Jazeera journalist Peter Greste told a press conference in Brisbane the campaign to get him released would not have gained half the momentum it had were it not for his family.

He said: "I've rediscovered just how important they really are and how important they are."

Freed journalist Peter Greste has said it feels "incredible" to be home after being in an Egyptian jail for 400 days.

He told a press conference in Australia: "I've dreamt about this so many times and the reality is nowhere near what I imagined it to be, it's so, so much better.

"I really want to thank everyone who has been involved with this campaign - from the many hundreds of thousands of ordinary people who joined the campaign to the diplomats and politicians.

"To everyone who has been involved along the way I want to say an incredible, heartfelt thank you."
