Stephen Sutton among Queen's Birthday Honours

Everton in the Community Chief Executive Officer and Deputy Chief Executive of Everton Football Club, Dr Denise Barrett-Baxendale, has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

She's being awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for “services to the Merseyside community”.

Since her appointment, the official charity of Everton Football Club has received a plethora of local, national and international awards in recognition of the life-changing work it undertakes in the community on a daily basis.

A former midwife who delivered hundreds of babies during the Blitz is among several people from the region recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours. Ethel Dobbins, 99, will receive the British Empire Medal for services to her community.

Torchwood star John Barrowman has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

The 47-year-old Glasgow-born entertainer, who has also hosted TV shows and enjoyed a successful West End career, has been honoured for his services to entertainment as well as his contribution to charity.

He declared: "I'm going to enjoy it for the rest of my life."

"It's one of the proudest things, thus far, that has ever happened to me," he added. "I never expected to get an honour like this. You hear about other people getting them but never expect it yourself."

He went on: "I am completely honoured by it, I'm proud to be a British subject, to be part of Great Britain, to be honoured by the Queen and for it to be run through by the Government. I am absolutely thrilled and had no hesitation at all in accepting."

A mother who tried to change attitudes after her daughter was murdered because she dressed as a Goth said the honour was a tribute to all those who have helped her raise awareness of sub-culture hate crime.

Sylvia Lancaster set up a foundation in the name of her daughter, Sophie, shortly after her death in 2007, with the aim of changing attitudes within society towards sub-cultures such as Goths.

Sophie, 20, was killed by repeated kicks to her body by two teenage assailants as she lay defenceless on the ground after she had cradled her boyfriend, who was also attacked in a park in Bacup, Lancashire.

Her mother's tireless work with SOPHIE (Stamp Out Prejudice Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere) has been acknowledged with an OBE for services to community cohesion, particularly in reducing hate crime.

Downton Abbey's Oscar-winning star Dame Maggie Smith has been elevated to a Companion of Honour.

For TV viewers, the 79-year-old is now inextricably linked with her role as the Countess of Grantham in the ITV period drama, while Harry Potter fans will recognise her as Professor McGonagal.

Her career stretches back to the 1950s, beginning at the Oxford Playhouse in 1952 and within four years appearing on Broadway.

Her stage performances have continually drawn acclaim and she has collected numerous awards for roles in plays such as Hedda Gabler, Three Sisters and Private Lives.

She earned the first of six Oscar nominations in 1965 for best supporting actress in Othello, going on to win best actress four years later for her commanding performance in The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie. Dame Maggie won a further Oscar in 1978 with the supporting actress prize for California Suite.

Singer and broadcaster Cerys Matthews said she was honoured to land an MBE for her services to music - and said it was more for the records she had played on air, than the ones she had made herself.

The 45 year old said: "I am delighted to receive this honour, and accept it not so much for the music I've made but for the music I've played on my BBC 6 Music show.

"Folk , blues , jazz , traditional music whose authors didn't receive recognition in their lifetimes. I am passionate about sharing music, through writing books, making documentaries and, of course, through the wonder that is radio... and to receive recognition for this is incredible."

Matthews, formerly the singer of Welsh band Catatonia and now a radio and TV presenter, said it was "incredible" to be recognised for her passion for sharing her love of music
