A lorry driver has been arrested following a five-vehicle pile-up which killed two French nationals.

The 45-year-old was held in connection with the crash on the M26 near Kemsing, Kent, just after 9.30am yesterday.

Two people - a 22-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl, both from France - died in the collision which blocked both carriageways

Seven other people were taken to London hospitals in a "serious condition" by South East Coast Ambulance Service following the crash.

Motorists taken to hospital after a multi-vehicle crash on the M26 in Kent are said to be in a "serious condition", a police spokesmen has said.

However the conditions of those injured have not been disclosed.

Two lorries, two cars and a box van were involved in the collision on the London-bound carriageway near Kemsing just after 9.30am.

M26 Londonbound will remain closed until 8pm

The M26 Londonbound will remain closed until around 8pm tonight, according to Kent Police.

Traffic is being redirected to join the M20 at Wrotham Heath and traffic on the Coastbound side is being released past the scene.

One lane will be opened to new traffic afterwards.

Kent Police is now appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them.

Officers were called at 9:37am on Wednesday 16th April to a report of a multi-vehicle collision on the Londonbound carriageway of the M26, near Kemsing.

The collision involved five vehicles - two HGVs, two cars and a box van.

Five people trapped after serious crash on M26

Five people are believed to be trapped after a serious collision on the M26 involving multiple vehicles.

One car, two lorries and a van with a trailer were involved in the crash, Kent Fire and Rescue said.

Paramedics, police and fire crews are at the scene.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area after both carriageways were closed.
