Receiving the award, David Neilson who plays Roy Cropper told the crowd: "The reaction to shows like ours and EastEnders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks - they create a feeling of community.

"Occasionally you get a huge reaction from a story and you realise how important these shows are because when people laugh together, cry together you get community."

Julie Hesmondhalgh wins NTA for drama performance

Coronation Street's Julie Hesmondhalgh has been awarded the National Television Award for serial drama performance for her role as Hayley in the soap.

Accompanied by co-star David Neilson on stage, she said: "We said that if either of us were lucky enough to get this tonight we would come up together because there ain't no Roy without Hayley and there ain't no Hayley without Roy."
