Long delays at Edinburgh Airport after security alert

"Significant delays and cancellations" are expected at Edinburgh Airport after it was evacuated earlier this afternoon following the discovery of a "potentially suspicious bag" in the search area.

Edinburgh Airport has reopened but passengers have been warned to expect "significant delays and cancellations" with no flights departing until after 8pm.

Edinburgh Airport has has now reopened following an earlier incident.

Passengers should expect significant delays and cancellations to flights and should continue to check with their airlines.

No flights are expected to depart until after 20:00.

Police have confirmed that the incident at Edinburgh Airport has been resolved and that "there isn't, nor was there ever, any risk to the public".

The airport was closed and passengers were evacuated this afternoon following the discovery of a "suspicious bag".

A Police Scotland statement said that bomb disposal technicians were "immediately contacted" and a "thorough examination of the bag was undertaken and the contents were deemed safe."

We are now satisfied there isn't, nor was there ever, any risk to the public and the airport will now begin to reopen.

It is expected to take a number of hours before Edinburgh Airport returns to normal service after its closure this afternoon.

Some Edinburgh Airport passengers have been evacuated to a nearby Hilton Hotel after the airport was closed following the discovery of a "potentially suspicious" package inside a bag that is reported to belong to a passenger.

Passengers planning to use Edinburgh Airport today have been advised to contact their airline carrier as the airport remains closed following the discovery of a "potentially suspicious" package in what is believed to be passenger luggage.

Some vehicles appear to have been allowed to leave the airport, according to Twitter user @WaleJamie who said that no cars, buses or taxis were being allowed access into the site.
