Armed Forces Day celebrations

The Red Arrows performed a fly past during Armed Forces Day celebrations in Nottingham today.

Crowds of people are gathering in Scarborough to help celebrate Armed Forces day. Events are taking place across the country which began today with an artillery regiment firing a volley of gun blasts at Nottingham Castle.

Around 1,000 servicemen and women will march through Cardiff later to mark Armed Forces Day. The day celebrates the work of all military personnel past and present.

The March through the Welsh capital will coincide with the 70th anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Atlantic. It was the longest continuous military campaign of the second world war.

After the march, Coopers Field in Bute Park, Cardiff, will play host to various events such as musical performances by the Commando Training Centre Band of the Royal Marines supported by the South Wales Police Band.

There will also be displays by the Royal Signals motorcycle display team, the "RAF Falcons" Parachute Display Team and a fly-past by an RAF Sea King helicopter.

The Prime Minister has said the UK have not been "good at expressing pride" for Armed Forces ahead of celebrations today.

David Cameron said: "That's what this day is all about, pride and gratitude, celebrating what our armed forces do and above all saying thank you. If we're honest, for a long time in this country we were not very good at that".

MPs from across the UK have tweeted in anticipation of today's Armed Forces Day.
