PM: Heart goes out to burns woman

Prime Minister David Cameron said his heart went out to the woman who was burnt while transferring petrol between canisters in her kitchen.

Speaking at 10 Downing Street shortly after he chaired a meeting of the Government's Cobra emergency contingencies committee, Mr Cameron said:

This was absolutely a desperate incident and a terrible thing that has happened to this woman. My heart goes out to her and her family. Everything that can be done is being done to help her at this time.

Union: Government must warn public over petrol dangers

We do not know the details of this tragic incident which will be of concern to everyone in the fire service. Any firefighter hearing what happened will be deeply concerned for the woman involved and her family. What this incident shows are the dangers of handling petrol, especially in the home... The Government needs to issue urgent professionally-based advice to warn the public before we have another incident, perhaps with far worse consequences. It is important we're taking every step to ensure there are no other incidents of this kind.

Fire officer: No flames to extinguish

Lee Smith, one of the fire officers called to the scene, told BBC Radio 5 Live that firefighters did not need to extinguish any flames but had to deal with "a lot of smoke".

The woman was cooking dinner while decanting the fuel from an "appropriate petrol container" into a glass jug when the vapours ignited, according to Mr Smith.

That "created panic," causing the woman to spill the petrol, which "resulted in spillage on the lady's clothes which ignited as well", said Mr Smith.
