Police release name of victim after explosion

Police and fire investigations are continuing into a fatal explosion in Oxford. Now the name of a victim has been released.

At around 4.45pm on Tuesday 14 February, emergency services were called to Gibbs Crescent, following an explosion and fire.

Following this, a multi-agency operation to make the area safe and to examine the scene was undertaken.

On Saturday (18/2) a search of Gibbs Crescent by Thames Valley Police, Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service and Urban Search and Rescue specialists, led to the discovery of human remains.

Formal identification has now taken place by the Coroner and has confirmed them to be 48-year-old Guido Schuette. His family have been informed and Thames Valley Police officers continue to support them.

Search crews in Oxford find human remains

Police searching the site of the explosion in Oxford on Tuesday say they have found human remains. Officers began a brick by brick search of the rubble this morning. The housing association A2 Dominion says staff are saddened to learn of the discovery and offered support to other residents. Here's our report from Mary Stanley.

BREAKING: Human remains found following Osney explosion

Human remains have been found at the site of an explosion in Osney Mead in Oxford.

A search of the area around Gibbs Crescent started at 10am this morning - the human remains this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the area on Tuesday afternoon to reports of an explosion, a fire and the collapse of a property.

On Thursday Thames Valley Police issued a public appeal for Guido Schuette, aged 48, who was unaccounted for and was believed to have died during the incident.

His family has been informed of the latest development today and are continuing to be offered support from officers.

Gibbs Crescent will remain closed until further notice.

Oxford explosion: Police release image of missing man

The police and fire services in Oxford have held a press conference to share the latest information about the explosion at a housing complex at Osney Mead.

A resident who was unaccounted for in the aftermath, has been named as Guido Schuette aged 48. He is described as 6ft tall, of a heavy build, with short grey hair and blue eyes. He is believed to walk with a limp and uses a crutch as well. His family have been informed and Thames Valley Police have issued a statement.

“Our strong hypothesis is that Guido died in the fire, and we are continuing to offer support to his family at this time.

“However while our search of the scene continues and this is not confirmed, one line of enquiry within the investigation is that Guido could be missing.

“Given the circumstances of the incident, we are asking members of the public not to approach Guido but to call 999 immediately.”
