Nine London boroughs make list of top ten most miserable places to live in the UK

Nine London boroughs have made a top ten list of the worst places to live in the UK.

Barking and Dagenham, where house prices have risen 12.6% over the past year, was voted the worst place to live out of 130 places. Dagenham is also Britain's most burgled town, according to research released earlier this year.

24,000 people all over the UK were asked to evaluate their home on twelve factors ranging from neighbourliness and how much there is to do in the area, to how happy people are with their home decor, value and costs to run.

London boroughs did not fare well compared to the rest of the England, Scotland and Wales.

Most miserable places in the UK to live, in order:

  • Barking and Dagenham

  • Hounslow

  • Brent

  • Harrow

  • Newham

  • Tower Hamlets

  • Greenwich

  • Luton

  • Hillingdon

  • Haringey

Luton, which is in Bedfordshire, is the only place on the list that is not in London.

Happiest places to live in the UK, in order:

  • Harrogate

  • Shrewsbury

  • Ipswich

  • York

  • Chester

  • Inverness

  • Llandrindod Wells

  • Hemel Hempstead

  • Watford

  • Blackpool

Of all the London boroughs, Richmond was voted the happiest.
