Cyclist rides across M60 motorway carriageway before raising her hand to thank drivers

A cyclist has been caught on camera crossing an entire motorway carriageway - before raising her hand to say thanks to drivers.

The footage was captured on dashcam by a stunned motorist on the M60 in Greater Manchester, who said the incident 'made her blood run cold.'

It happened at junction 25 for Bredbury, one of the few in the country where traffic from the slip road enters into the outside lane, containing the fastest flowing traffic.

The female cyclist, who wasn't hearing a helmet, ignored all the warning signs and enters the carriageway before drifting across four lanes of traffic to the hard shoulder, where she carried on pedalling.

She even appeared to put her hand out to thank the driver for letting her past.

Louise Kay, 48, was heading from work in Stockport back to her home in Audenshaw at the time of the incident last September. She said she was forced slam on her brakes to avoid ploughing into the cyclist.

She has now shared the footage to warn drivers of the potential hazards they can face.

Louise said she carried on driving and came off at the next junction but she thought by then it wasn't worth calling the police as the cyclist had probably long gone.

It is illegal for a cyclist to be on the motorway under Highway Code rule 253, which lists bicycles as a prohibited vehicle.

Culprits can be handed an on-the-spot fine if caught.
