New Lord Mayor of Liverpool announced

Councillor Anna Rothery has been appointed the new Lord of Mayor of Liverpool.

Her appointment follows Peter Brennan's resignation from post in July after he sent a racist video to colleagues.

Rothery became a councillor in 2006 and is responsible for Princes Park ward – the area she was born and brought up in.

The new Lord Mayor has revealed she wants to be a role model for the black community and encourage others to set-out to achieve their goals, regardless of their background.

In 2012, she became the first councillor from Liverpool to address the floor of the United Nations in Geneva. She gave a speech to representatives of more than 50 countries about minority communities and how to get them to participate in politics.

A decision on the Lord Mayor’s three official charities will be made due course but Councillor Rothery has confirmed The Anthony Walker Foundation will be one of them.

Councillor Anna Rothery said:

Councillor Anna Rothery will be sworn in at a ceremony at the Town Hall on Wednesday 4 September – becoming the city’s first ever black Lord Mayor.
