New Chinatown regeneration approved
Work to regenerate Chinatown in Liverpool is set to begin early in the new year after the plans were unanimously approved by the city council's Planning Committee.
The first phase of the £200 million project, by developers North Point Global, is expected to be completed by mid-2017.
The New Chinatown project includes plans for 850 new homes, businesses, leisure facilities, a hotel and a Chinese shopping area.
The Government says the New Chinatown project is one of the key projects under the Northern Powerhouse umbrella. The plans were recently presented to China's President Xi during his visit to Manchester.
The development is being paid for by North Point's investment partners and the UKTI's Regeneration Investment Organisation.
Developers hope the New Chinatown will capture the energy of modern China while creating a hub for Chinese businesses and retailers looking for a base in the UK.
