Guernsey Post unveil new stamps featuring some of Alderney's most esteemed islanders
Guernsey Post has unveiled a new set of stamps featuring esteemed individuals from the Alderney Blue Plaque Trail.
The trail celebrates the achievements and contributions of people who have lived in the island.
Among those featured is the creator of the Wombles, children’s author Elisabeth Beresford (1926-2010).
Elisabeth's connection to Alderney began when she and her family visited for holidays before moving to the island in 1978.
Bridget Yabsley, head of philatelic at Guernsey Post, said: “Established in 1866, the Blue Plaque scheme is thought to be the oldest of its kind in the world, an initiative which has inspired similar programmes.
"Alderney’s Blue Plaque Trail provides a fascinating insight into the heritage and the influential individuals associated with the island.”
Also with his own stamp is Alderney-born Sir Henry John Gauvain (1978-1945) who was knighted in 1920 for his contributions to medicine. He also chaired the Alderney Evacuation Committee during the Second World War.
The stamps also include record producer Sir George Martin, referred to by many as the ‘Fifth Beatle', who bought a home on Braye Road in the mid-1980s.
Other notable individuals included are: First World War RAF pilot Tommy Rose, the Le Mesurier family, the founder of Methodism, Reverend John Wesley and journalist and cricket commentator John Arlott.
The stamps have been designed by Two Degrees North and are now in circulation and available to buy.
