'A part of Alderney's heritage' - celebrating Liza Beresford and The Wombles

Islanders in Alderney have come together to remember Elisabeth Beresford and her beloved creations The Wombles.

Liza Beresford moved to Alderney after visiting the island on holiday and lived there until her death in 2011. She loved the island so much, she named one of the Wombles after it.

To this day, she is remembered for her contributions to everyday island life.

As well as the exhibition, memories of Liza are being kept alive in a scrapbook at the museum where islanders are invited to share their stories of her time in Alderney.

Liza’s daughter Kate inspired the name ‘The Wombles’ when she mispronounced Wimbledon Common while on a walk. After her mother passed away, she donated the characters to Cancer Research.

Instead of going up for sale, they were put on display in Alderney Museum to be enjoyed by the public.

Geoffrey Wills was a close personal friend of Liza Beresford - so much so that she named one of the characters after him in one of her later works.

He said his inclusion in the book came as a very nice surprise.
