Alderney Football Club missed out on the chance to bring home two 1920 Muratti caps after they fetched four-times their estimate at auction in Guernsey.

The island club had crowdfunded more than £1,500 in a bid to secure the items, which date from the year of Alderney's only Vase victory, but they eventually sold for £2,800.

"I was disappointed not to win it, but I wasn't surprised at the price it went to", said Alderney player Steve Concanen, who had led the crowdfunding effort.

"You've got to think about how old those caps are, the memorabilia behind them and everything like that".

"It is what it is, somebody wanted them more than us and hopefully it's found a nice home", he said.

The club have not given up hope, however, of being able to secure another cap from that landmark moment in the island's sporting history.

"There has been a few people in contact about the caps, we've found out where a few are and there's a chance to hopefully buy one or two more", said Concanen.

"We are in contact with someone else who's got a cap and a winner's medal so I'll be looking to buy them privately. but whoever they are must be licking their lips right now", he joked.
