Fundraising effort launched to bring 1920 Alderney Muratti caps home

A fundraising effort has been launched to help return two Alderney Muratti caps to the island, on the centenary of their only ever victory in the competition.

The caps, which were presented to two of the team which beat Guernsey 1-0 in April 1920, are due to be auctioned locally.

One of the caps was sold three years ago for £400, with the pair expected to fetch up to £700 when they go under the hammer together this time.

Alderney player Steve Concanen set up the crowdfunding page with a target of £1,000, which, he said, would be supplemented by funds from other sources.

If successful he said the caps would be donated to Alderney Football Club and the Alderney Museum for display.

Auctioneers Martel Maides said it had received hundreds of enquiries for the items, which will be sold alongside a ticket from the 1920 semi-final as soon as coronavirus restrictions allow.
