Seven assaults committed in Guernsey prison in 2019
There were seven recorded assaults at Guernsey's prison last year - including two against staff.
An annual report, which is the first to be published by the prison's [newly appointed Governor John De Carteret](http://The report also found that three quarters of prisoners were engaged with programmes around education, learning and skills with almost all eligible prisoners able to work while in custody.), says there were 205 reported breaches of discipline carried out by 72 prisoners. 168 of these cases were dealt with through penalties, such as loss of privileges.
The most common misdemeanor committed was possession of items, or quantities of items, which were were not permitted (67 cases) . This was followed by disobeying of lawful orders (36 cases) .
Use of force was required on 66 occasions - however, 2019 also saw the lowest staff injury figures since statistics were recorded.
The report also found that three quarters of prisoners were engaged with programmes around education, learning and skills with almost all eligible prisoners able to work while in custody.
A total of 144 qualifications or awards were achieved by 76 students through the year, on courses including first aid, photography and employability skills.
The average daily prison population was down from 100 in 2018 to 91 the following year.
