Jersey lockdown rules relaxed if islanders are 'responsible'

Jersey’s Chief Minister has said slowly unlocking the island is the ‘right thing to do’ and an announcement is expected on Monday.

The Chief Minister suggested that the rules will only be lifted if islanders are ‘responsible’ over Liberation weekend.

His comments come after he claims that Jersey has ‘completely flattened’ the coronavirus curve.

Senator John Le Fondre was accompanied at today’s press conference by Medical Director, Patrick Armstrong. Mr Armstrong said that Jersey could not ‘remain isolated from the world indefinitely’.

Addressing his comments made last week that more people will die because of an easing of lockdown rules, Health Minister Deputy Richard Renouf explained that it is ‘necessary’ for islanders to not keep them locked down permanently.

The Chief Minister also aims to increase coronavirus testing from around 50 people a day to 500.

An agreement has been made with one UK lab to increase the island's testing capacity.

Results to hundreds of antibody tests carried out over the weekend are expected to be announced tomorrow.
