Nightingale Hospital provides extra employment for Jersey's construction industry

435 people are working on the construction of the new £14 million Nightingale Hospital in Jersey.

The structure is on loan from the Dutch company Neptunus, which brought over and built the shell over the Easter holidays.

Now the island's building firm J3 has taken over, hiring in 42 sub-contractors and 28 suppliers, to complete the interior.

Project Manager Marc Burton said while the reasons behind building the facility were sombre, the project had provided a boost for the construction industry.

The building is due to be handed over to the Health Department on Monday 4 May. Health staff will then fit it out with beds and medical equipment, and begin staff training.

The Nightingale Hospital is being described as a 'step down' facility, in which patients who no longer need intensive care can recover from Covid-19.

Acute care will remain at the General Hospital.
