People in Guernsey are being reassured help is available for victims of domestic abuse during the lockdown.

Islanders were told that trained staff are still on hand to support people affected by domestic abuse and that leaving home to escape domestic violence is considered an essential journey.

Guernsey's Police have seen 'a number' of domestic abuse cases over the past week.

The comments were made at Guernsey’s media briefing where Ruari Hardy, Guernsey’s Chief of Police, said that many of the cases related to people feeling the strain of lockdown.

Support and advice is available from SAFER and Guernsey Police, by calling 999 in an emergency or 01481 725111 for non-emergencies.

The police have also made six drink driving arrests since the start of April and nine people were caught speeding.

Whilst these behaviours are in the ‘minority’ people are being encouraged to stay at home.
