Nurses in Guernsey left with ‘no choice’ but to start industrial action

Nurses in Guernsey have voted to kick start industrial action proceedings.

The news comes after nurses had been protesting on the steps of the States building over their latest pay offer. The last proposal had offered all workers a 5% pay rise, with another 5% increase to the majority of nurses the following year. However, the Royal College of Nursing said it was an insulting offer.

Following the failed pay offer, members of the Royal College of Nursing have voted as to whether they should start proceedings that could lead to industrial action.

Almost all (98%) of the nurses that attended the meeting voted to start the proceedings. If industrial action is to go ahead, it would be the first time in history that the Royal College of Nurses have been on strike.

The Policy & Resources Committee says Industrial action will not change how the process moves forward, but will have an impact on patients and colleagues within the health service.
