Jersey GPs given power to prescribe medicinal cannabis
GPs in Jersey will soon be able to prescribe medicinal cannabis to their patients.
Only one brand is currently licensed for use in the island.
Sativex is used to relieve muscle pain associated with conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis.
Since January, people in Jersey have been able to receive a free prescription for the cannabis-based painkiller.
However, only hospital consultants could prescribe the drug.
But today States members voted in favour of extending prescribing powers to include the island's GPs.
The politician who brought the debate to the States says it is a landmark moment for Jersey.
The new legislation will come into force in February 2019.
