Development of residential area in Briarwood approved

Plans to build a major residential development at Briarwood in Guernsey have been approved.

The island's Development & Planning Authority have approved the framework for the site in the parish of St Martin.

The framework provides guidance on how the site might be development and how policies in the Island Development Plan will be applied.

The Authority say few responses were received after a six week public consultation period.

However when initial plans were put forward in April, they were met with anger from islanders.

Some comments from States Committees and public bodies were received during the consultation, including concerns about:

  • Additional housing the area

  • The density and mix of housing

  • The capacity of St Martin's School

  • Consideration of the school premises

  • The importance of the public car park currently on the site

  • Traffic & Highway issues

  • Impact on wildlife

The Authority say they considered all of the matters raised before approving the framework.

The number and type of housing units is not yet known and will depend on the developers' designs.

However, the Authority say they expect anywhere between 15 and 22 dwellings on the site.

The full framework is on the States of Guernsey website or available to view at Sir Charles Frossard House in St Peter Port.
