A woman from Jersey who has terminal cancer wants islanders to have the right to end their own lives.

Roberta Tupper was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer and a brain tumour just over three years ago.

Despite successful surgery to remove the tumour at Southampton Hospital, doctors gave her six months to live.

Roberta started an anti-cancer diet and was given medication which is not available on the NHS, which she believes has helped to prolong her life.

Despite treatment, the cancer has now grown by 10% since her last scan.

Roberta plans to end her life at the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland, as there is not an option for her to do so closer to home. She says she is "furious at how behind the times the UK and the islands are".

At Dignitas, patients undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if they are sound of judgement, before they are able to end their own lives.

Assisted dying is illegal in Britain but the States of Guernsey will vote on whether to debate the process on May 16th.
