A midwife has been suspended following the death of a mother five hours after giving birth at Guernsey's Princess Elizabeth Hospital.

Anne Passave was investigated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council for failing to offer pain relief to a mother who had lost almost two litres of blood.

During the two-day panel hearing, a total of 34 charges against Passave were discussed relating to a failure to plan or provide appropriate care during labour, which included:

  • a failure to record any assessment of the patient's contractions;

  • a failure to make a plan of care for the active phase of labour;

  • a failure to plan or record appropriate care following labour.

The panel concluded that Passave was not responsible for the death of the mother but that her actions led to unwarranted harm.

This case is the latest in a number involving medical professionals working with babies at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital.

Passave, who has worked as a midwife for 11 years including in the Isle of Wight, was suspended from the profession for 12 months today and has been given 28 days to appeal the decision.

Passave has since been working in care homes and has now moved to Leicester.
