Five in custody over death of British tourist in St Lucia

Police in St Lucia say they have arrested two further people in connection with the murder of Roger Pratt, a British tourist who was travelling around the world with his wife.

Five people remain in custody and are assisting police with their inquiries.

The widow of a Norfolk sailor who was killed on their yacht in St Lucia has said she did not feel unsafe until the final minutes of her husband's life.

Margaret Pratt said:

"We have enjoyed our time in St Lucia, we have been here almost two and half weeks... We have not felt unsafe in St Lucia until the events of those final tragic minutes, and have had considerable kindness during the period of the homicide investigations."

The widow of a British man killed in St Lucia has said she never felt unsafe in the country until the events of "those final tragic minutes".

Roger Pratt, 62, was killed as three armed men climbed aboard their yacht moored off the coast of St Lucia on Friday.

Margaret Pratt said local people had demonstrated great kindness towards her as the investigation into her husband's death continued, during an interview with local media.

The Police Commissioner for St. Lucia has apologised to the family of a Warwickshire man killed defending his wife from attackers.

Roger Pratt, 62, was killed on board the couple's yacht in Vieux Fort on Friday night, police said.

His wife, Margaret, was treated for injuries in hospital and has since been released.

Vernon Francis has moved to reassure tourists, saying while St. Lucia "is not perfect" it is "a safe country."

Friends of a man from Warwickshire, who was shot dead in St Lucia while sailing round the world with his wife, have spoken of their shock at his death.

Roger Pratt, from Moreton Morrell, was killed while trying to defend his wife Margaret from attackers.

They'd been on a trip round the globe to mark Margaret's 60 birthday.

Danny Fisher, a friend of the couple, says it's a very tragic end to what should have been the 'trip of a lifetime'.

Authorities in the Caribbean island of St Lucia said they have arrested three people today in connection with the murder of a British tourist who was traveling around the world with his wife.

The victim, Roger Pratt, 62, was on a trip with his wife, Margaret, ahead of her 60th birthday when their boat was boarded by three unidentified attackers on Friday, police said. Margaret Pratt was also treated for injuries.

The murder has raised concerns on the small, eastern Caribbean island, where tourism accounts for about two-thirds of the economy.

The couple who were attacked in the Caribbean were attacked while their boat was moored off the Vieux Fort coast where they had been staying as part of the round-the-world voyage, celebrating Mrs Pratt's 60th birthday.

The couple left Lowestoft in June, navigating the English coastline before heading to the Algarve and on to the Caribbean.

Writing on her LinkedIn profile before she left, Mrs Pratt said: "Off travelling! The plan is to be in the Caribbean for my 60th birthday in January 2014... all a bit of a leap into the unknown. Please stay in touch - I plan to be an assiduous correspondent!"

The couple lived in the village of Moreton Morrell before embarking on their adventure.

The sister of a British woman who was injured and her husband killed after three men boarded their boat in the Caribbean has said the family are "totally shocked and shattered".

Margaret and Richard Pratt had planned to set sail for the next stage of their journey the day before the attack off the south coast of St Lucia on Friday.

Jenny Riley, Mrs Pratt's sister, told the Daily Mail: "They had gained deep sea sailing experience by cruising extensively on the south coast and around Europe. To sail across the Atlantic and explore the Caribbean was Roger's dream.

"They were both experienced sailors and had sailed dinghies and keel boats since they were children. It is a tragic, shattering end to their dream."

Mrs Riley also said her sister was discharged from hospital last night and has returned to the couple's yacht.

We are deeply shocked by the tragic events in St Lucia. Roger had been preparing "Magnetic Attraction" for this voyage over several years and as a talented engineer, his attention to detail was second to none.

The boat was prepared immaculately for world wide cruising and he was very safety conscious. They had been planning a world cruise for a long time and in recent years had gained deep sea experience on the south coast and around Europe.

To sail across the Atlantic and explore the Caribbean was Roger's dream.

Margaret retired in the summer and they set off from Lowestoft in July. They sailed across the Atlantic with two other members of the family, arriving in Martinique for Christmas.

Just the two of them sailed on to St Lucia to celebrate the New Year and Margaret's 60th Birthday.

They were both experienced sailors and had sailed dinghies and keel boats since they were children. There is a big sailing community both in the Norfolk and Suffolk area and around the country who have been following the "Blog" describing their adventures and experiences.

The tragic disaster in St Lucia is a shattering end to their dream and we thank everyone for the messages of sympathy and support that we have received.
