Pub landlord rescues woman from flooded car in Leicestershire

A pub landlord waded through floodwater to save a woman trapped in a flooded car in Leicestershire.

She was trapped in her car for two hours before she was rescued.

Cimi Kazazi, who owns the Italian Greyhound in Great Glen, braved the freezing water to reach the stranded motorist. He took time to reassure her and then carried her to safety. He told us how much danger she was in.

  • "She would have passed. She would have gone in 15-20 minutes."

Cimi says "She would have passed. She would have gone. She would have gone in 15-20 minutes probably. That's how bad she was.

"You see the car. This moment it was covered with water. She said she was there two hours.

"Apparently she tried to get out from the village then when she drove the car didn't have any manoeuvre so it couldn't go backwards or forwards so the car was flooded.

"Nobody knew that there were people. That there were people in the cars."

  • "I believe that everyone would do the same."

"You don't think in the moment. I didn't think. I didn't think of anything. I just thought run. Run and get her out.

"It is dangerous but I believe that everyone would do the same."

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue teams have declared a major incident in the county after widespread flooding in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

They say they've received more than 200 calls, with crews attending incidents involving cars stuck in floodwater, evacuating residents from flooded homes and rising water. So far, almost 60 people have been rescued.

Judi Beresford, Assistant Chief Fire and Rescue Officer, said:

"Flooding poses a serious risk to lives and property, and we urge everyone to take these warnings seriously. Our Control room and crews are working tirelessly to assist those in need and to keep people safe.

"We are working with our partners to reduce the impact of this major incident and ask the public to avoid flooded routes when travelling and never to enter floodwater."
