Car and train track submerged in floodwater as heavy rain causes travel delays and cancellations

A car has been submerged in floodwater in Birmingham, after a night of heavy rain in the Midlands.


It's been another night of heavy rain for parts of the Midlands, causing delays and cancellations on roads and rail.

It was the UK's coldest night of the winter so far, with a temperature of minus 13.3C recorded in Loch Glascarnoch in the Highlands, between Ullapool and Inverness.

Many roads have been left flooded, and a car has been submerged in floodwater in Birmingham.

The top of the light-coloured vehicle was seen submerged in the dip on Green Road off Sarehole Road in Hall Green this morning (6th January).

The River Cole is flooded, leaving paths and trails impassable in places.

Eyewitnesses say the driver was not able to get through the high flood waters and was forced to abandon their vehicle.

West Midlands Police and West Midlands Fire Service have cordoned off the scene.

The Environment Agency has issued 16 flood warnings in the region, including eight in Birmingham.

There are also 18 flood alerts across the West Midlands, with more bad weather expected.

"Only travel if absolutely necessary"

Elsewhere in the West Midlands, two cars were submerged in flood water on the A4091 by Middleton Hall in North Warwickshire.

Coleshill Fire Station said: "We must emphasise to only travel if absolutely necessary. Conditions are hazardous with heavy snowfall please be careful."In a forecast for the West Midlands, the Met Office said: "An icy start in places. Early rain and snow gradually clearing with drier and perhaps brighter spells for the afternoon, though scattered wintry showers continuing. Feeling cold in the brisk northwesterly wind. Maximum temperature 5C."Tonight: further wintry showers and icy stretches possible overnight, primarily across northern counties. Occasional clear spells in between these, under which a patchy rural frost is possible. Winds easing. Minimum temperature 0C."

In the East Midlands, trains between Derby and both Nottingham and East Midlands Parkway were cancelled.

This is also affecting CrossCountry and East Midlands Railway services.

All lines between Peterborough and Leicester are also closed because of flooding.

The Met Office's latest forecast for the West Midlands says:
