Sandiacre couple “lose everything” in house fire caused by lightning strike

A couple in Sandiacre have “lost everything” after a fire caused by a lightning strike destroyed their home.

Sharon and Kevin Hopkinson were inside with their granddaughter at the time but were unaware that their bungalow had been hit by the lightning bolt and their roof was on fire.

It wasn’t until a man across the street started waving to grab their attention.

The lightning strike came as the region experienced heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The couple say items they could've saved because they'd been left untouched by the fire were then destroyed by the heavy rain.

They did however manage to salvage a small amount of clothing, documents and Freddie, their shitzu dog.

The company which runs the property has said the couple will be provided with temporary accommodation, as months of repairs will need to be carried out.

A fundraising page set up by a close friend of the pair has already raised £2,000.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service say the property is now safe and secure.
