Police have released footage of the moment a motorist was clocked driving at 140mph on the motorway.

The car can be seen tearing down the M6 Toll overtaking a lorry and a car in the process before eventually slowing down.

Officers from the Central Motorway Policing team pulled the vehicleover onto the hard shoulder just after 9 am on May 17.

They say they have received a surge in complaints about lockdown speeding on Staffordshire's roads.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "Officers from Central MotorwayPolice Group caught this driver reaching speeds of around 140mph on M6Toll last weekend.

"Just a few extra miles per hour can make all the difference to adriver’s reaction, braking distance and put lives at risk."

Inspector Sion Hathaway, from Central Motorway Police Group, said:"Since the lockdown began, traffic flow has dropped by over 50 percent on the networks we police. However, this has resulted in a largeincrease in the number of vehicles exceeding the speed limit by 15mphor more.

"Though the roads are quieter because of Covid-19, the law hasn’tchanged. Drivers should be sticking to the speed limit and anyone whoisn’t will be caught by our officers."
