Rolls Royce involved in manufacturing extra ventilators for NHS
A wide range of UK and international businesses are offering to help manufacture ventilators as the Prime Minister makes it clear that the UK must step up its' production, as a response to the coronavirus outbreak.
Yesterday (March 26) The Prime Minister spoke to a number of British suppliers about rapidly increasing ventilator production to support patients with COVID-19.
A ventilator is a machine that takes over the body's breathing process when the lungs fail.
At the moment there are more than 8,000 ventilators available to NHS patients with another 8,000 to be produced by existing manufacturers within the next few weeks.
Engine-maker Rolls Royce, which has major sites in Derby and Birmingham, is one of many companies to have responded to the Government's plea and is now involved in the project to help rapidly manufacture greater quantities of ventilators.
The Health Secretary assured the companies involved that his Department will ensure that regulatory bodies are able to process the new devices and approve those that meet the requirements as soon as possible.
The Government is also working with many other UK manufacturers to build, design and develop new effective, safe and easy-to-build ventilators.
