Alton Towers has released impressive new footage of its latest rollercoaster ‘Wicker Man’ which is due to open sometime this Spring.

The ride has been shrouded in secrecy during the four years it has taken to plan and build, and is a £16 million investment by park operator Merlin Entertainment, which owns the theme park in Staffordshire.

Last year ITV Central was given behind the scenes access to the white knuckle roller coaster while it was under construction, which at that point was known only as Secret Weapon 8.

But now ahead of Alton Towers opening for the 2018 season on March 17th, park bosses have released day & night footage of empty cars racing around the track as the six story ‘Wicker Man’ erupts into flames.

It is Alton Towers’ first major new investment since it relaunched its older roller coaster Air, as virtual reality space ride Galactica in 2016.

Later that year, Alton Towers was fined £5 million for breaching health & safety laws after a crash involving another of the attraction's roller coasters, the Smiler, in 2015.

Two cars on that ride smashed into one another leaving four park guests with serious injuries.
