Armed police to patrol Derbyshire streets over festive period
Derbyshire Police have announced armed officers will be on patrol over the Christmas and New Year period.
The force said it is in response to 'strong public support for the proposal' from a poll about making people feel safer during this season on twitter.
The Armed Response Unit account put out the poll to its followers and 2,280 responded.
Ninety per cent said they would be happy to see armed police patrolling busy areas such as shopping centres and markets, while six per cent said they wouldn’t be happy.
Four per cent of respondents were unsure.
Derbyshire Police released a video of Assistant Chief Constable Chris Haward explaining the decision
Assistant Chief Constable Chris Haward said:
Mr Haward said the officers will be on patrol but will remain near to their vehicles, should they be needed to attend an incident.
