A woman was charged £27 for just 40 minutes of parking at Birmingham Airport after the car park charges were recently changed.

Kerry Parkes went to pick up her aunt, who was returning from a holiday in Thailand but was running late and followed the signs to a car park.

“I saw a sign on the way in saying parking for up to an hour was one pound,” she claimed.

But apparently that charge was for another car park and Mrs Parkes says she didn’t see any signs for the new rates.

Mrs McGee was delayed picking up her bags and she and Mrs Parkes returned to the car 40 minutes later.

When they were told they owed £27, they assumed that there had been a mistake.

“We thought it was a mistake with the machine. We went and asked the man and he said, ‘Yes, it was changed about four weeks ago’.

They said they were stunned by the parking fees increase.

Birmingham Airport said that Mrs Parkes’ bill had been high because she accidentally parked in the drop-and-go car park.

The car park is just for dropping people off and that’s why the prices have been increased to deter people from staying there.

A spokesperson said there are about six signs along the way and also confirmed the drop-and-go car parking rates were increased in August.
