Thousands of healthy pigs on farms in East Yorkshire and right across the Calendar region are at risk of being culled due to a shortage of skilled butchers.

A lack of abattoir workers meant 10,000 pigs were culled in the region in the run-up to Christmas, East Riding of Yorkshire Council was told.

The failure to reach a deal means fish and chip shops will be selling Arctic cod imported from Norway rather than landed in Britain.
