Two teenagers who were killed in a crash on New Year's Day have been named.

William Herbert, 16, and Olly Mitchell, 18, were passengers in a Volkswagen Golf that collided with a Vauxhall Grandland on Staithes Road, in Preston, Hull, at around 1.20am on 1 January.

William, from Howden, died at the scene.

Olly, from Ellerton, died in hospital from his injuries.

William was the son of two North Yorkshire Police workers. An online fundraiser set up to support his family has already collected more than £11,000.

In a message on the fundraising page, organiser Katherine Howard wrote: "On New Year’s Day, the world lost a bright young soul... A beloved son, and friend to many, he touched the lives of everyone who knew him with his kind heart, infectious laughter, and unwavering spirit."

Goole Town Cricket Club, where he played, posted a tribute on social media, saying: "William was a fantastic young cricketer for Goole and Eastrington CC and he will be sorely missed at both clubs."

Two other passengers in the Golf were also injured in the crash. A 16-year-old girl is in a critical but stable condition. A 17-year-old boy is in a serious but stable condition.

Two people who were in the other car - a 62-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman - suffered serious injuries. Two other passengers suffered minor injuries.

The 17-year-old driver of the Golf has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is on bail.
